A data center construction site is not an ordinary building site: hundreds of entries a day, dozens of trades and subcontractors, high-value equipment on site and operators with strict security requirements. The security provider has a direct impact on whether the build runs smoothly – or whether queues form at the gate every morning. This checklist helps general contractors choose.
1. Data center experience
Ask specifically about completed data center projects, not just general site security. A specialist provider understands the transitions between construction, commissioning and handover to live operations.
2. Staff qualifications
The minimum in Germany is instruction under §34a GewO and registration in the national security register. Better still is a high share of staff with the IHK certificate of competence, plus clean police clearance and – depending on the operator – extended checks or security clearance.
3. Fixed staff pool instead of floaters
Changing staff means constant re-induction and mistakes at the gate. Make sure the provider assigns a named team per site and guarantees inducted replacements.
4. Access control that doesn’t slow the build
Identity checks, badge printing, visitor and key management and tool and material checks must work at peak times too. Ask how many daily entries the provider has handled and how it works with full-height turnstiles and access systems.
5. Audit-proof documentation
A digital logbook, documented patrols with checkpoint verification, regular reports and complete incident reports are essential for site management, operators and audits.
6. Compliance and liability
Ask for evidence of minimum wage compliance, verified right to work, NDAs and a data protection concept for CCTV and access data. Clarify whether subcontractors are used – every extra layer increases your liability risk as general contractor.
7. Certifications and insurance
Relevant evidence includes ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and DIN 77200, plus sufficiently high liability insurance.
8. Rapid mobilisation and scaling
Schedules change. A good partner provides teams at short notice and scales at peak times without losing quality.
9. More than security from one source
Fire watch, paramedics, traffic marshals, site logistics or cleaning from one provider reduce interfaces and coordination effort.
10. Short lines and availability
How many layers sit between you and a decision? With smaller specialist providers you often speak directly to management – even at night.
